There’s nothing like spending a weekend at home when it rains. Steaming cup of coffee beside you, a good book in your hands, and that welcome breeze after the heat of the summer. But, as with everything else, the rainy season also comes with its own set of downsides. And, unfortunately, most of these downsides have to do with your home.

From those pesky insects invading your house to the mold creeping up on your furniture, there’s a whole host of problems that flood your house when the rains come. But, don’t let that dampen your spirits.

We asked our expert interior designers on how to tackle these common monsoon problems, and they gave us these 3 simple DIY methods to tackle the pests, dirt, and moisture this season! Read on to know more:

1. Pests

Whoever thought oranges are only for eating! It turns out, most household pests can’t stand the citrus scent of oranges. So how do you use them? Our experts recommend using a handy orange vinegar spray to ward off those annoying bugs.

What you need:

  • A 500 ml storage jar
  • The peels of 2-3 oranges
  • White or apple cider vinegar to top it up

Put the orange peel in the jar and top it up with the white vinegar. Store it in a cool, dark place for 2 weeks. Then, transfer the vinegar into a spray bottle and start using it to get rid of the insects (especially the ant armies!).

Pro Tip: If you’re planning a picnic in the open, but don’t want to get attacked by mosquitoes, then orange peel can rescue you here as well. Simply rub the peel thoroughly over your arms and legs, and wait for the mosquitoes to get repelled by the citrus scent!

2. Dirt

Did your carpet get dirt and other hard to clean stains? Don’t worry, we have a handy DIY carpet cleaning hack that’ll make those stains vanish without burning a hole in your pocket.

What you need:

  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • A vacuum cleaner

Make a paste with the vinegar and the cornstarch. Use a dry cloth to rub it into the stain, and let it set. Vacuum the spot after 2 days for a spotless carpet!

Pro Tip: Place 2 water absorbent doormats, in neutral colours at every entrance of the house- one outside the door, and another just inside the threshold- to stop the dirt at the entrance of the house!

3. Water damage to furniture

We love sitting on the balcony swing and just kicking back. But, come monsoon, those raindrops can wreak havoc on your favourite piece of furniture. The only way to do it is to polish your wooden furniture with a waterproofing coat. And, we’ve got an easy DIY solution that’ll do the trick!

What you need:

  • Steel wool
  • Linseed oil
  • Turpentine

Mix the linseed oil and turpentine keeping a ratio of 2:1. Go over the surface of the furniture with the steel wool. Then, apply the oil and turpentine mixture with a soft cloth and rub it in well. Make sure that there’s no spillover and the furniture has dried before you decide to expose it to the elements again!

Pro Tip: To avoid damp creeping into the indoor furniture, make sure you push all the chairs, beds, tables, and cupboards away from the walls so that they don’t absorb moisture from the walls. Also try placing dried neem leaves in those dark corners to prevent the fungus from setting in.

Here’s hoping that these simple hacks help you enjoy the monsoon showers without any worries! And, if you have any home care problems that you can’t solve single-handedly, we’ve also got the best home experts to help you out!
