A water heater or a geyser, as it is more commonly known in India, needs as much care (if not more) as any other electronic device. Check at least once a year if the temperature and pressure release valves are working. You can check this by releasing the pressure a couple of times. The third thing you can do is to switch on the geyser only when you need it and switch it off immediately after you are done.
It is always better to use metal inlet and outlet pipes since they are more resistant to heat than the standard plastic ones you get with a geyser. Also, remember to check the joints regularly. In case you see whitish deposits from hard water or rust around the joints, then it is time to replace the inlet or outlet pipe.
